The Raqua (lit. “shredder”) Medium Cruiser is one of the newest vessels in the Qyax Computation fleet. It appears to have been developed as hybrid between the earlier CM 02 Laorok Sarox (lit. “digital erasure”) and the CM 03 Iziakralkor (lit. “sniper rifle”). The former appears to be a close-attack beam craft in the vein of the Sutroq Attack Cruiser and the latter a dedicated artillery cruiser. These two vessels are believed to be among the earliest designs of the Computation’s current starship generation, and so the Raqua likely contains refinements from both of these vessels.
The Raqua is something of an odd duck in terms of mobility profile. With an acceleration of 14mc and 155 MEUs, it is more mobile than the slower elements of the fleet, but cannot quite match the mobility of the faster elements, even those of its size or larger, like the Sutroq. Nevertheless, the two Voolot-Nhoor VN01950 engines make it more agile and faster than most ships of its size.
But whereas the previous medium cruisers were specialists, the Raqua is a generalist. This is suspected to be because the Raqua is intended to operate out of large battles much like a heavy cruiser – it is of very similar mass – on security and peace-keeping duties. The Laorok Sarox seems to be a vessel focussed around a very powerful primary beam, and the Izaikralkor a slow-moving vessel with many railgun batteries, neither of which are ideal for dealing with small-scale raids or small pirates.
The Raqua instead can deal with both, as its weapons payload demonstrates. The bulk of the Raqua’s armaments are twelve XF-4 railgun turrets, with an impact yield of 125TXq each, backed by four XF-1 railgun emplacements for anti-fighter and point defence. This gives the Raqua an excellent engagement zone with its primary weapons.
The spinal particle beam is estimated at an output of 2360TXq and appears to have an accuracy envelope of about 300 000km and appears to be optimised for exploiting the gaps made by the railguns as the Raqua closes to its beam’s arc and range.
Early intelligence suggests that the Raqua’s passive defences are similar to the two earlier vessels. The Raqua has shielding estimated at 2000TXq – significant, nearly two-thirds as much again as a typical heavy cruiser, though its armour is somewhat below that benchmark, estimated at around a AIC of 800TXq. This infers that the Laorok Sarox and Iziakralkor have values close to these.
It is believed that both the Laorok Sarox and Izaikralkor are still in service with the Star-Naval Defence Fleet, but as yet, none have been observed in the field. As specialist vessels, they are likely to only be deployed in larger attack fleets, something the Qyax do not regularly use.
