The FF 02 Taron Farr (lit. “rushing strike”) Fast Frigate is a somewhat unusual design. The Qyax designation of “fast frigate” is borne by only two frigate that have thus so far been identified. As the name suggests, the fast frigate have high speed and high manoeuvrability. But while the FF 03 Graata Sarox uses this speed to manoeuvre for direct-fire strikes with its rockets, the Taron Farr uses its speed to stay at long ranges, kiting and harassing enemy vessels too slow to approach it.
While in larger scale-battles, it would require many Taron Farrs to have an appreciable effect, in smaller-scale engagements, which can be much more drawn out, the Taron Farrs can and do wear their opponents down.
With an acceleration of 22.3mc, no Xygritt or Wodef ships only a few of the lighter Xyriat and Phystyulon ships can catch up to the Taron Farr, making the only counters long-range missiles (which are very expensive), small craft or turreted railguns such as the six XF-2 railguns the Taron Farr itself carries. The Taron Farr’s manoeuvrability is also excellent, giving it great evasive capability, rated to 250 MEUs.
A pair of XF-1 railgun turret emplacements with an engagement sphere of 7.5Ym³ and output yield of an estimated 1020TXq serve as both secondary weapons and interdiction defence. The use of anti-fighter interdiction batteries over anti-missile point-defence batteries is smart, as while most of the elenthnar major powers possess long-range missile technology, it is not typically deployed with most missile vessels due to the expense. It is thus most likely that the Taron Farr will be approached by small craft, or fast escorts, against which the superior range of the XG-1 railguns provide more useful anti-ship capabilities.
The Taron Farr itself is only lightly protected, with only shielding rated to 310TXq. This means that a counter-attack that is effective will usually be sufficient to put the ship out of action. In particular, the Phystyulon’s Vistrixon corvette is almost a hard-counter. However, given that the Qyaxes’ most frequent foe is the Xygritts, most Taron Farrs can operate in their harassing role largely without impediment.
