The Zotublam’s design profile was quite simple – take one torpedo turret from the High Shaman Gutrug class and mount it on a frigate hull. This was the proposal to replace the Agdush Frigate. The Agdush has performed somewhat better than some of its stablemates, but was hampered by many of the same flaws, notably in having short-range blaster batteries that were functionally useless in its primary role.
The Zotublam approached solving the problem by removing the blasters entirely. This freed up sufficient mass to improve the Agdush’s turret. The Agdush’s turret, mounted forwards, could only be brought to bear in a little more than the forward hemisphere. Replacing it with one of the High Shaman Gutrug’s newer turrets nevertheless require mostly rebuilding the frigate entirely, though the Zotoblam still retains a few structural elements in common.
The turret as placed in the forward hull, this time with the larger, battle-tested turret. This position allows the Zotublam to bring the tube to fire burst of four torpedoes at almost any angle. The only targets it cannot hit are close enough to the rear that the starship hull itself gets in the way, and even then, staying in that slot is difficult. At normal starship ranges, any minor modification to attitude (such as what is made during standard combat evasion) will let the turret have a line of fire.
Like the Agdush, the Zotublam only carries 60 750 TXq-yield torpedoes – enough for only fifteen bursts. This is more than the High Shaman Gutrug (which can only manage nine), but means that the frigate can’t stray too far from a supply ship.
To protect the significant investment of the torpedo tube, the Zotublam has considerable defences. The hull is covered with multilayer composite armour, rated to an AIC of 1680TXq. Unusually for an orc vessel, this is covered with a light shield array rated to 190TXq. This provides the ship with at least some protection from ion cannon attack. Six Ruk BFG 14 point-defence turrets complete the package.
The Zotublam, like the Agdush, is slow for a frigate, rated to only 108 MEUs and an acceleration of 10.2mc. However, the greater turret coverage means that the Zotublam only really needs to keep up with the others in is flight group, where it can safely fight from range.
