The Gurikh was the first of vessel of the second wave of the 6th generation orc vessels, being deployed first in early 2351.
The Gurikh is intended to replace the much-maligned Umag. The Umag had numerous problems. Conceived as a vessel that would close to short range and attack, it was heavily armoured, but its weapon selection was counter-productive. It was armed with a single fixed torpedo and a blaster battery with an accuracy envelope of only 11000km; and the blaster battery had to do double duty as a makeshift point-defence system, for the Umag mounted none. With only moderate speed for a vessel of its size, the Umag was not easily able to get in close to use its weapons. The torpedo tube was ill-suited to close-range work, being an expensive weapon system, and one not suited to engaging fully shielded vessels. Only light escorts – the precise target the Umag had difficulty running down – would have weak enough shields for the blasters to knock-out, meaning that against its assigned targets the Umag was often wasting its fire.
It has some success operating purely at range with the torpedo, but it was an expensive and vulnerable single torpedo tube.
The Umag’s role was thus split between the Hakrokrig Shooty Frigate – armed only with blasters, and the speed to get in close – and the Gurikh, which is a much more useful light artillery ship.
The Gurikh mounts a single torpedo turret. This turret uses the technology premiered on the High Shaman Gutrug War Dreadnought. Smaller than the original, the Gurikh’s turret fires only a single torpedo. The Gurikh carries 42 torpedoes, which gives it a fair combat endurance. However, once these are expended, the Gurikh has almost no offensive capability. The secondary weapons were limited to point-defence weapons; three Ruk BFG 14 turrets, but thus correcting arguably the biggest failure of the Umag.
The performance and protection are quite similar to the Umag. Acceleration is better than the Umag’s at 14.5mc.
Manoeuvrability is worse, rated to only 138 MEUs to the Umag’s 152 MEUs; however with the addition of the turret and expectation that the Gurikh will be fighting at range, this is less important. Multilayer composite armour rated to and Armour Integrity Capacity of 1680TXq. This is exceptional protection for a vessel of the Gurikh’s size; but without shields, the Gurikh’s protection can be attrited away. It is also still very vulnerable to ion cannon attack, as was proven by engagements against the GTSR and the Gurikh was already too far along to accommodate such a major change.
