The Skratkrak is one of the few early 6th generation designs that has been a resounding success. The Skratkrak expands on the formula laid down by the older Ratdak Fightercruiser. Nearly half as big again as the Ratdak, the Skratkrak is at the border when miniaturisation technology is optimal; any larger and full-sized starship generators and engines would be required. Like the Ratdak, the Skratkrak is big enough to be a pocket warship, having sufficient facilities for the crew to not require a hangar to operate from and is quite capable of extended operations.
Like most orc smallcraft, the Skratkrak relies of shielding over armour. Smallcraft and generally too small to gain much benefit from the multilayer composites, simply because at the starship level, what is needed is mass or armour, either to function ablatively or just to resist penetration. The Skratkrak still has a thick skin – an AIC of 100TXq, though without and starship-grade hardening. But on top of this, it has shields rated to 400TXq (though again, only at fighter-grade hardening). This level of protection is still excellent, however, and makes the Skratkrak a very difficult target to kill, especially when combined with its manoeuvrability (rated to 355 MEUs).
The Skratkrak carries a significant payload. A 38TXq Skunder-7 blaster cannon is mounted on each wing. It has no less than six Ruk BFG 12 autocannon turrets, three dorsal and three ventral. These guns have an accuracy envelope of 120000km and an engagement sphere of 7.24Ym³, affording the Skratkrak the ability to hit most attacking fighters before they enter weapons range. This reduces the effectiveness of arguably the best counter to the Skratkrak.
While these weapons are effective at dealing with other smallcraft, they are less effective on larger capital ships. To deal with these targets, the Skratkrak mounts a trio of torpedo tubes. These fall somewhere between typical light torpedoes and full-scale capital ship torpedoes (“heavy light torpedoes”) and each tube carries four torpedoes with a 410TXq-yield warhead. This gives the Skratkrak a serious punch even against shielded and armoured targets.
Recent reports indicate that a new version is being prototyped, which replaces the Ruk BFG 12s with the newer BFG 16 sextuplet model turrets. If so, this will only enhance the Skratrat’s reputation to be feared.
