One of man's greatest fears is death. Not only for the end of consciousness, but also knowing that we will be consumed and devoured by worms. And one of the worms found consuming the corpses is the tenacious worm.

The tenacious worm is a normally small worm with a relatively hard, segmented shell, with a pair of claws next to its mouth, the chelicerae. Popular wisdom says that tenacious worms only feed on the corpses of convicts and criminals, but we have no way of confirming these beliefs.

The tenacious worm is considered an ominous sign. And the mage Malespero, the Lord of Despair, for many years delved into the study of the occult arts. He studied the use of pinworms in divination, researched precognitive dreams of death, read all about conjurations that bring terror and despair to men, even to mortal agonies. Consumed by this baneful magic, he became—or rather, degenerated—himself into a scavenger creature. The worms merged with his flesh, became one with him. Obsessed with death, he allied himself with it, and passed to feed from it, looking for his victims, to torment them in indescribable agonies, and patiently, waiting for death to settle in their bodies, cooling the flesh, only for him to taste it.
