The Funeral Hell Pigs run far ahead of the funeral march, emerging from the fog before the bells and dirges can be heard. At first glance they resemble monstrous swine swollen to impossible size, but a closer look reveals bodies in constant collapse. Their hides split beneath the pressure of disease, exposing writhing masses of maggots and nesting flies. Clouds of insects pour from their wounds with every movement, trailing behind them like black smoke. Their tusks are chipped and stained, their eyes reduced to leaking pits of black blood, and their breathing sounds like bellows dragging air through a grave.
Unlike the other creatures of the Lament of Black Tears, the Funeral Hell Pigs possess no memory of loss and no understanding of grief. They are living engines of contamination, born from carcasses left too long among the marching dead. Rot accumulated upon rot until flesh, vermin, and corruption fused into a single organism. What remained was not a beast in the natural sense, but a colony of disease given shape and hunger. The handlers of the Antipope do not truly command them; they merely point them toward fresh prey and release the chains.
The Funeral Hell Pigs roam ahead of the procession, prowling through ruined trenches, abandoned bunkers, and corpse-filled craters. Their snouts can detect blood beneath mud, smoke, and stone, allowing them to uncover survivors long after a battle appears finished. Those they find are rarely killed outright. More often they are mauled, infected, and left behind as the creatures continue their hunt. Entire regions have been rendered uninhabitable simply because a pack lingered there for too long.
In battle, the Funeral Hell Pigs serve as hunters, trackers, and harbingers. They break hidden positions, flush enemies from cover, and spread panic before the main body of the Lament arrives. Their passage leaves swarms of flies, diseased carcasses, and fouled ground in its wake. Many soldiers claim that the buzzing reaches them before the beasts themselves, a sound that grows steadily louder until the fog erupts with tusks and rotten flesh. Where the Funeral Hell Pigs have passed, the funeral march rarely finds living resistance.
