The Funeral Fleshguard form the immovable core of the funeral march, grotesque sentinels whose purpose is to endure where all others fail. Their bodies are swollen and layered, reinforced with slabs of dead flesh harvested from fallen allies and enemies alike. Armor is an afterthought; iron plates are nailed directly into meat, while shields are fused to arms that barely retain human shape. Like all of the Lament, their eyes weep cold black blood, but they do so in silence. They do not chant. They do not mourn. They remain.
These warriors were not elevated for devotion or martial skill, but for refusal to collapse. When the Lament lost its former master and command disintegrated, many succumbed to frenzy or despair. The Funeral Fleshguard were those who accepted the final truth without protest: their role was not to advance, but to hold. Their swine-like features are heavy and structural — thickened jaws to bear weight, widened torsos to anchor mass — mutations shaped by necessity rather than excess. Death has become part of their construction, turning corpses into reinforcement and memory into ballast.
They serve the Antipope as living bulwarks and custodians of what little remains sacred to the march. The Funeral Fleshguard are assigned to shield commanders, relic bearers, and the profane remnants carried from battlefield to battlefield. In combat they advance only when ordered, planting shields into the earth and forming walls that refuse to break. Blades, shells, and fire sink into layered flesh already numb to harm. They do not pursue enemies; they deny ground, fixing the procession in place like a line of grave markers driven into the soil.
Their role in the war is absolute containment. Where others spread grief forward, the Funeral Fleshguard ensure the Lament is never torn apart from within. They are the weight that keeps the march intact, proof that even in total ruin, cohesion can be forced to endure. To face them is to learn that killing is insufficient — one must dismantle the dead themselves to make them yield.
“The march rests upon our backs.”
