Among the Inquisitor’s followers, few make me as nervous as the Ashward Engineers. They are sappers, artificers, demolishers, and reluctant archaeologists, trained to enter places that wiser men have sealed and forgotten. They breach fortified walls, reinforce collapsing trenches, disarm ancient mechanisms, and open crypts whose locks have remained untouched for centuries. To them, every ruin is both a structure to be understood and a suspect to be interrogated.
Their armour is heavier than that worn by the Ashward Men-at-Arms, although little of its original surface remains visible beneath soot, chalk markings, and the dents left by falling masonry. Each engineer carries an assortment of hammers, drills, measuring rods, iron wedges, coils of wire, and explosive charges prepared for different kinds of stone and metal. Before beginning their work, they cover walls and doors with numbers, diagrams, and brief prayers. I once assumed these inscriptions were blessings. One of the Engineers informed me that most were warnings for whoever might later recover their bodies.
They are called whenever the retinue encounters a sealed chamber, a buried shrine, a trapped passage, or a fortification that cannot be taken by ordinary assault. The Pontifical Ash-Inquisitor gives them only the information required for the task, while the Ashpan Lieutenant keeps the surrounding Ashward at a safe distance. The Engineers work slowly when they can and with terrifying speed when they cannot. They know that a careless blow may destroy a sacred relic, release a hidden corruption, or bring several hundred tons of consecrated stone down upon everyone nearby.
I accompanied them beneath the ruins of the Monastery of Saint Varro, where they spent two days clearing a stairway buried since the previous century. At its base, they found an iron door bearing neither hinges nor lock, only a row of human teeth driven into the metal. The senior Engineer examined it for less than a minute before declaring that the door had not been built to keep intruders out. Even so, he ordered his people to place their charges. When I asked whether we should first consult the Inquisitor, he looked toward the darkness behind us and replied that the Inquisitor had sent them because he already knew what their answer would be.
Three Engineers died when the chamber opened. A fourth lost an arm but continued directing the excavation until the object within had been secured and wrapped in lead cloth. Their names never appeared in the official account of the discovery. The report spoke only of the recovered relic and the heresy it later exposed. Such omissions are common. Without the Ashward Engineers, many of the Inquisition’s greatest discoveries would remain buried forever, along with the reasons they were buried in the first place.
“Every sealed door is a question. We are the ones expected to open it.”
