Abyssal Arch-Charybdian Choir (Chorister)

No Abyssal Arch-Charybdian Choir is deliberately created. It begins when several Abyssal Charyb-Singers are drawn together by a resonance that neither their masters nor the creatures themselves appear to understand. Their separate hymns gradually lose their boundaries, voices overlapping until a single impossible cadence emerges from many throats. Tendrils knot together, bodies drift closer, and flesh begins to grow across flesh. Given enough time, it becomes impossible to tell where one Singer ends and another begins. What remains is a congregation fused into a single organism, forever drowning in an ocean that exists somewhere beyond the mortal world.

The song changes with them. The voices of individual Charyb-Singers evoke the terror of sinking and the vast shapes moving beneath black water; the Abyssal Arch-Charybdian Choir makes those visions feel real. Men hear waves breaking inside sealed bunkers. Salt water runs from mouths that have never touched the sea. Entire companies awaken from the same dream of descending through lightless water toward something enormous waiting below. When the Arch-Charybdian Choir draws near, its many tendrils move together like weeds beneath an unseen current, and its chained mass seems to drift rather than walk, as though some abyssal tide alone decides where it will go.

It never travels alone. Its song draws followers from shipwrecks, drowned cities, flooded trenches, and forgotten stretches of coast. Foremost among them are the lost souls of the drowned, pale shapes drifting around the Arch-Charybdian Choir as though still suspended beneath the surface. Some wear the remnants of naval uniforms, others trail burial cloth or broken chains, and many bear the wounds of whatever dragged them beneath the water. They follow without command, answering the great song with fragments of their own final cries. Living devotees sometimes join the procession as well: shipwreck survivors, mad sailors, and those who have dreamed too often of the depths. In time, they cease to distinguish their own voices from the Choir surrounding them.

Even the Gluttons of the Abyss approach such a creature with reverence and unease. The Abyssal Arch-Charybdian Choir answers to neither captain nor admiral, and the drowned procession surrounding it makes any attempt at command seem absurd. It follows currents no navigator can chart, sometimes abandoning a battle to face an empty horizon, sometimes leading entire fleets toward shores their maps insist do not exist. The Gluttons follow when they dare, believing that the multitude of dead gathering in its wake are not merely followers. They are the first arrivals of a congregation still being summoned from every grave beneath the sea.
