Fred, despite being very intelligent, seemed in some respects to have the intelligence of a child combined with that of an adult.
He became very popular with the military and they soon ordered a special unit of more alien beings like Fred.
The professor never ceased his investigations after his first success with Fred, but he found the success rate to be almost non-existent. So he mixed Fran's DNA with his next experiments and even though most didn't work, he started to have some valid prototypes.
