On the bleeding edge of SSA miniturisation technology, the CAW-109 Spoiler Fighterdestroyer dos excatly what its name suggests. The classification Fighterdestroyer harkens back to the origin of the word “destroyer,” an abbreviation of “frigate destroyer”i.e. a vessel that destroys frigates. Thus “fighterdestroyer” means a vessel that destroys fighters (rather than a destroyer that carries fighters); the omission of the space between the words was to differentiate the two. Fighterdestroyer fell out of favour for the more general fightercruiser, but for the Spoiler, the SSA have resurrected it.
The Spoiler can operate as a screening point-defence vessel for larger ships, but is equally capable of running down all but the fastest fighters. Armed with eight triple-barrel particle pellet guns in ball turrets, placed to provide maximum coverage, and supplemented by no less than twenty light hyper-ray blisters, the Spoiler can output a devastating wall of fire. The Spoiler is also well-protected from enemy with several fighter-scale shield generators.
The Spoiler is also just large enough to accomdate a permenant crew, rather than having to rely on a hangar bay. Though cramped, it has enough amenities that Spoiler crews are comfortable even during extended operations.
The CAW-109C Spoiler C (countermeasures) replaces four of the particle pellet guns and some of the hyper-ray blisters with an ECM array, allowing it to provided ECM coverage both to capital ships and to groups of fighters.
