The GTSR’s predilection for relying on heavier vessels is clearly illustrated by the fact that, of the first wave of GTSR ships that entered service in 2349-2350, there was only one frigate design, the Elgaria, with two variants.
The Elgaria is still a fairly large frigate, only around 20% smaller than the Gerrhonotus Destroyers. The Elgaria mounts four engines, the profile of which matches those of the smaller Abronia Corvette. Unusually for the GTSR, these engines are mounted both above and below the centreline. Projections suggest that the Elgaria will have performance not dissimilar to the Abronia (which is little over half the size of the Elgaria) and in line with conventional frigates, at around 16mc acceleration and 180 MEUs.
Both variants have the same shielding, armour and point-defence systems. Five smaller blisters each carry a stock Herosine Arms LS-914B laser battery, whose combined output is 750TXq. Covering the rear arcs are a pair of Herosine-manufacture LZ-3300 heavy lazer cannons, with an output of 240TXq each. The advanced composite armour is rated to an estimated 400TXq AIC and shielding of 220TXq rating completes the defences.
Offensively, the Elgaria variants – Coerulea and Multicarinata – are entirely different. Both versions are intended as anti-capital ship platforms. They are likely to be used as low-cost supplements to the firepower to the larger vessels, rather than as escorts.
The Elgaria Coerulea, named for the northern alligator lizard, is equipped with four particle beam cannons rated to a combined output of 624TXq. These are identical blisters to those used on the Varanus Griseus as the secondary armament.
The Elgaria Coerulea has been seen in slightly larger number than the Elgaria Multicarinata.
