Hawkings Astronautics (Military) HAM-106 Heimdallr Class Light Cruiser
The HAM-106 Heimdallr cruiser is a newer platform for an older weapon. In truth, more of an extensive refit than a true new design, the Heimdallr started life as a testbed for the then-new Warp Dynamics AA01X Astro Accelerator. The AA01X ccreated a considerable amount of radiation when firing. Further, the power core required necessicated using a “dirty” power core with the bare minimum of radiation shielding. As such, all non-critical systems (such as the crew quarters and computer core) were shifted away from the rear drive section. The seperation allowed the engineers to use more passive radiation shielding through the narrow profile of the vessel’s spine, cutting down the mass requirements that a more typical system woudl require. The first test bed proved in tests to be vastly structurally too weak to handle typical SSA manouvers, and so the reinforcing pylons were added, giving the proto-Heimdallr its distinctive profile. The weapon was successful, and the production version AA01 Nova Astro Accelerator was begun, and fitted to the prototype HAM-96 Bifrost. However, advances in accelerator technology allowed significant improvements in both power consumption and lowering raditation output, allowing the larger Warp Accelerators (as found on the modern HAM-127 Charybdis) to avoid such stringent measures, and the Bifrost was outdated within a decade. Nevertheless, it continued to serve for nearly three decades.
As the SSA began construction of their new fleet, it was decided that the could not afford to simply mothball the remaining Bifrosts. The old Bifrosts underwent a significant upgrade to bring them to current standards. This required essentially gutting the entire vessel to upgrade the internal systems, so it was not until late 2340 that the Bifrost re-emerged as the Heimdallr.
The Heimdallr is centred around two AA01 Nova Astro Accelerators. While only short-ranged, the Nova can still casue considerable damage. Improvements in technology allow the Heimdallr to carry 50% more shields than the Bifrost, and both FTL and sublight engines have been expanded to current SSA standards. The remaining weapons are a mix of medium hyper-ray blisters for anti-ship and anti-fighter operations. The former are unchanged from the Bifrost, though the number of anti-fighter blisters has been increased by 50% thanks to the overall improvments in miniturisation.
