The DL(D) Zraag (lit.”stinger”) Light Drone is one of the most common drones used by the Qyax Star-Naval Defence Fleet. Roughly the size of a small corvette, it has no crew, as is essentially a single large automaton. As with all of the Qyaxes’ drone vessels, it can be controlled remotely of “piloted” by a single digital intelligence, or left to run on its own automated systems. The Zraag is of a simple design. Using components more simplified that the tiny Kuff, the Zraag is cheaper to mass produce, and few Qyax detachments are fielded without some.
The Zraag is optimised for low production costs over performance, which is adequate to task but not outstanding.
The Zraag’s main job is shield and armour stripping, that is the provide firepower to deplete enemy shielding, and put enough holes in the armour that other weapons can shoot into the gaps and bypass it. To this end, they mount a quartet of four particle beams, While these beams are short-ranged, only having an accuracy envelope of about a hundred thousand kilometres, their combined output is about 530-540 TXq. The beams radiate a quite deep orange visible light.
A pair of lazer turrets rated to a combined output of about 490TXq provide some limited anti-fighter and anti-missile protection, but the Zraag is otherwise only protected by it evasiveness and a 160TXq-output shield. This is enough to protect it from stray attacks, but any concerted assault will quickly disable the vessel. However, as the Zraag is considered largely disposable and is easily replaced this fragility is not a major design flaw.
The Zraag is propelled by two cheap VN01650 engines, the same used on the DL(D) 03 Kehtt. It gives a similar performance, though the Zraag’s slightly smaller hull mass pushes the acceleration to 15.9mc over the Kehtt’s 15.7mc and a gain of 5 MEUs over the Kehtt’s 176 MEUs.
This performance envelope makes the Zraag a good partner for the even smaller Kuffs or Kehtts, who can best take advantage of the holes the Zraags punch, but often Zraags are deployed in packs. In large scale battles, swarms of Zraags can inflict significant, unless the enemy concentrates heavy firepower upon them – but in doing so, they cannot be attacking higher priority and more valuable targets.
