The repeated failures and shortcomings of the Bashnag Medium Cruiser made it the first vessel to cease to be produced. Its replacement, the Lurshiv, entered service in 2351.
The Bashnag had suffered from the early 6th generation’s lack of focus. While its heavy torpedo tubes were undoubtedly powerful, the two small missile racks and blaster batteries did not complement the armament. The missile racks, equipped with salvo rockets, were insufficient in number to make an impact and were easily intercepted, since the Bashnag was almost never deployed in numbers or with other missile-equipped craft. The blasters were simply too short ranged to be useful with the Bashnag’s sluggish manoeuvre profile and did not give a significant amount of shield-stripping power even when they got into range. Even the torpedo tube’s effectiveness was hampered by the Bashnag’s inability to bring them to bear.
The Lurshiv was built to redress these issues. The torpedo turrets used on the High Shaman Gutrug were refined and improved, and scaled up to accommodate the Bashnag’s larger 220TXq-yield warheads. This require significant modification to the materials to handle the additional torsional stresses imposed by 300m turret at sufficient speeds to engage a target moving at significant fractions of light speed. This required the turrets to be rebuilt also from scratch. The delay meant that the Gurikh Frigate, using a cut-down version of the High Shaman Gutrug’s turret, beat it into service by a few months.
To ensure that the turrets were securely rooted against these forces, the amount of mass required was considerable. Added to that imposed by the armour, the bulk of the rest of the Lurshiv had to be built using low-weigh, high-volume materials else it would have struggled to leave the shipyards. A larger surface area was practically mandated for the optimum armour coverage. As a result, the Lurshiv looks quite a lot larger than the Bashnag, even though its overall mass is quite similar.
All the secondary weapons were removed to accommodate the turrets. Aside from the two torpedo turret, the Lurshiv only has a series of Ruk BFG 14 emplacements, with a combined output of 1290TXq. The armour remains comparable to the Bashnag’s, with an AIC rated to 5880TXq.
The Lurshiv’s engines, while more powerful than those of the Bashnag, fail to produce sufficient power and the vessel is very cumbersome, rated at only 79 MEUs and with an acceleration of only 7.1mc.
The Lurshiv rather incredibly only carries twelve torpedoes for each of its launchers. While this is generally sufficient for a single battle, it means the Lurshiv has very little endurance. On the other hand, the lack of secondary weapons mean that once the magazine is empty, the captain is less incentivised to try and close the range and fight, as happened with the Bashnag. Whether this shortage of ammunition will create as many problems as the Lurshiv solved is an open question.
