The VN-334 series was developed partly for export, but ended up being purchased in by the DHZ Army in preference to the originally intended ZBD-334 that is was developed from. One of the major advantages was that the VN-334 fitted with the most advanced electronics warfare systems in human space at the time. This had been considered too expensive for the notoriously tight DHZ procurement, and the ZBD-334 had only been fitted with the older generation of technology. But the difference in performance was so marked in the vehicle’s intended role that even the bureaucrats had to admit defeat.
This change-over delayed production until 2337.
The VN-334 was part of the mid-2330s incremental update to the DHZ army. Following doctrine, it was designed to take several different turrets, but typically only two are in use.
The first, the APC turret was a protected pintle-mount machine gun first used by the ZSL-336. Originally intended to use the smaller turret from the ZSL-315, the delay allowed the better-protected version to be fitted onto the VN-334. The second turret contains a 30mm railgun with 2km range. Vehicles with this turret are designated VN-334C.
The base VN-334 is used as an APC for the DHZ’s light infantry platoons, while the VN-334C is used as an armoured car.
