The Marginalia are beings that exist where reality loses certainty. They are not children, demons, spirits, or mutants, though they resemble all of them in different ways. Scholars claim they first appeared wherever the world had suffered too much violence to remain whole. Priests insist they are fragments of souls that slipped between divine judgment and damnation. Alchemists argue they are mistakes left behind when creation itself was wounded. None have ever proved their theories, for every Marginalia seems to contradict the last.
No two of them are alike. One may possess too many eyes that never blink, another the tiny hands of an old man, another the cracked porcelain face of a forgotten saint. Some drag broken wings through the mud without ever attempting to fly. Others leave footprints that vanish before they are fully formed. They gather where stories end abruptly: abandoned trenches, ruined shrines, collapsed libraries, nameless graves, and shattered relics. There they sift through the remains with obsessive care, collecting scraps of paper, broken icons, spent cartridges, teeth, bones, or anything else that once held meaning.
The Marginalia speak in fragments. Every sentence sounds as though it belongs to a larger conversation that no one else can hear. They finish forgotten prayers, whisper the final words of long-dead soldiers, and recite passages from books that have never existed. Sometimes they repeat a person's thoughts before they are spoken. Sometimes they answer questions that no one has yet asked. Those who spend too long listening often begin searching for memories they never possessed.
Neither Heaven nor Hell claims them. They wander freely between armies, ignored by demons one day and sheltered by priests the next. Soldiers sometimes leave food beside them, not from kindness, but from fear that driving them away might erase something precious from the world. For the Marginalia seem drawn to things that history is about to forget, preserving them in ways no living witness can understand.
“They remember what the world crossed out.”
