The heart of the Roman military was made up of the disciplined and effective legionnaires of the first and second century A.D., known as the Principate period. They wore uniform armor that gave them mobility and protection, including metal cuirasses, shoulder guards, and helmets. Legionnaires were adaptable on the battlefield, armed with the gladius sword for close combat and the pilum spear to disperse enemy formations. Their training strongly emphasized discipline, formation drills, and coordination, which enabled them to fight as a unit. Soldiers of the legion engaged in maniple warfare and employed the renowned "testudo" formation, shields interlocking for defense. They were taught engineering in addition to fighting skills, and they were instrumental in building the infrastructure of the empire.
