n ancient Rome, the Signifer was a standard-bearer in a Roman legion. The Signifer carried the legion's standard, or signum, which was a flag or emblem that represented the legion and its purpose. The signum was typically topped with an eagle or other symbolic figure.

The role of the Signifer was an important one, as the standard served as a rallying point for the legion during battle. The Signifer would also use the signum to relay orders from the commander to the rest of the legion and to signal different formations and maneuvers.
