Each creature carried one splinter to the empty altar and placed it beside the others. By sunrise they had reconstructed most of the icon, although several pieces had clearly been missing. The chaplain wrote that the completed face belonged to a saint he did not recognize. When he returned with another priest, there was no icon, no creatures, and no altar. They crawl onto ammunition crates, helmets, collapsed beams, even the wounded themselves, and simply watch. One surgeon claimed that seventeen of them sat around his operating table while he tried to save a young officer. Whenever the man's heart stopped, every creature turned its head toward the same empty corner of the room. When the officer finally died, the Marginalia left without a sound. The surgeon refused to say what he had seen standing in that corner.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003eThe strangest stories concern those who try to harm them. A sapper once kicked a Marginalia away from his ration bag and watched it disappear beneath a ruined wall. For the rest of the week, his comrades repeatedly forgot his name. Then they forgot his rank. By the ninth day his identification papers were blank, and his own letters contained no signature. The sapper deserted before anyone discovered what would be forgotten next.
